What Are Core Measures?
Core
Measures are a collection of patient
care measures which have been
scientifically proven to improve
clinical outcomes for patients.
The CMS (Centers for Medicare
& Medicaid Services) established
the Core Measures in 2000 and
began publicly reporting hospital
information relating to the Core
Measures in 2003. Hospitals voluntarily
submit data from medical records
about the treatments their patients
receive for heart failure, pneumonia,
surgery, and heart attacks. The
data includes care received by
patients with Medicare, those
enrolled in Medicare health plans,
and those who do not have Medicare.
Currently, KDMC reports on 30
inpatient core measures and 4
outpatient core measures. Beginning
in January 2012, we will be reporting
on 44 measures. Click here to

How Are Core Measures Used in Hospitals?
After years of research and testing in hospitals across the United States, Core Measures have been proven to reduce the risk of complications for patients who undergo surgical procedures and prevent recurrences of illnesses such as pneumonia and heart failure. The monitoring of a hospital's core measures assist hospitals in evaluating how well these evidence-based standards and guidelines are used during the delivery of patient care. Core measure evaluations also assist hospitals to focus efforts on improving the quality of the health care they provide.
How Do Consumers Use Core Measure Scores?
King's
Daughters Medical Center knows
you have choices when deciding
which hospital is best for you.
Core measure scores provide relevant
information about the patient
care we give so you can make an
informed decision. The scores
are the end result of converting
medical information from patient
records into a rate or percentage
that you, the consumer can review
at www.kdmc.org
or http://hospitalcompare.hhs.gov/.
The Hospital Compare website also
displays scores of other hospitals
which can help you, your family
and friends to compare KDMC to
other hospitals in this local
area, throughout the state of
Mississippi and the United States.
You will notice as you review
the scores, a time lag of several
months between the time a hospital
reports data and when this same
data is posted to the Hospital
Compare website. KDMC, like
other hospitals, has to wait until
all the state and national hospital
statistics are compiled, to update
any core measure information posted
on its website.
