Player of the Week 2012
Players of the Week - Week 10
Well, the end of the regular season is finally come to a close, and as always, what a ride. This has truly been a fantastic season of high school football with memorable games and jaw-dropping performances to spare. KDMC would like to congratulate every Player of the Week award recipient of the 2012 season on fantastic performances throughout the season. We look forward to celebrating your accomplishments even further at KDMC’s annual Player of the Week Luncheon held on Dec. 14, 2012. We look forward to seeing you there!
Offense:
The final Offensive Player of the Week goes to another repeat recipient. QB Zach Smith from Brookhaven High School. The Panthers ended their regular season with a win over South Jones as Smith completed 13 of 17 passes for 229 yards and 2 TDs to lead the way. This marks the 11th straight season with a playoff berth for Brookhaven. While the regular season is finished, you can be guaranteed that Smith and the Panthers are just heating up. And if he can continue to put out performances like this, Smith just might lead his team well into the post-season.
Defense:
The final Defensive Player of the Week is another member of the Brookhaven Panthers, DE, Leo Lewis. While Smith was showing out on offense, Lewis was doing the same on defense, making what most would consider the "play of the game". South Jones and Brookhaven had been exchanging scores in somewhat of a see-saw match until Lewis scooped up a fumble and scurried 75 yards for a Panther TD. This seems to be the play that broke the back of the South Jones team as they could never recover, losing 62-43. Lewis' stats outside of that play were nothing to write home about, but that's what is so great about sports... they don't have to be. What matters is what you do when the game is on the line. Coaches ask their players all the time, "Who's gonna make the big play tonight?" And tonight, Lewis decided the answer for himself.
Players of the Week - Week 9

Offense:
This week's Offensive Player of the week is BA senior QB, Gage Posey. This is Posey's second KDMC honor this season. This past Friday, the Cougars defeated a very tough Trinity Episcopal squad 34-14 in route to a playoff berth. This big win was accomplished on the shoulders of the seasoned QB, as he threw for 189 yards and a TD, and also rushed for 94 yards and another TD. Posey and the rest of the Cougars will look to continue their good play and ride this momentum into the offseason.
Defense:
While the Offensive Player of the Week gave a great effort in a big win for his team, this week's Defensive Player of the Week did the same - but his team could not pull out the win. Brookhaven High School's JaBoree Poole is Week 9's Defensive Player of the Week, as he was all over the field on Friday night. The Panthers lost a heartbreaker of a game to arch rival and district foe, Wayne County, 17-15. when I say that Poole was all over the field, that is in no way an exaggeration. He had 14 total tackles (5 for a loss of yardage), 1 sack, 2 QB hurries, and 1 forced fumble. That is the prime definition of having a "complete" game. While it always stings to lose a nail-biter like this one, one satisfying thing is that Poole can walk away from this knowing that he gave his all and made a dramatic impact out on the gridiron. Expect this young man to continue to make a splash out on the field on Friday nights.
Players of the Week - Week 8
Offense:
Once again this week there are two gentlemen sharing KDMC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Both of these young men gave exceptional performances this past Friday, leading their teams out on the gridiron. The first recipient is senior RB, Deon Moore, From West Lincoln Attendance Center. The Bears defeated Sacred heart 32-7 in large part to the monstrous show put on by Moore. Moore carried the pigskin 34 times for a whopping 215 yards averaging 6.32 yards per carry. He had a long rush of 24 yards with 1 touchdown. The fact that Moore's longest rush was 24 yards tells me that Sacred Heart made him earn it, and earn it he did. The senior runner is the type of back that every coach loves - a true every down running back' a guy that can play all 3 downs and carry a heavy workload.
Offense:
The second Offensive Player of the Week recipient is Lawrence County High School's Nico McDonald. I believe one impressive performance on the ground deserves another as he had 110 yards on just 14 carries averaging almost 8 yards per carry. Not only did McDonald have a great yards per carry average, but he also reached pay dirt 3 times punching in 3 TDs. Both of these guys have had solid seasons and will look to finish strong for their respective teams.
Defense:
This is Jeremy Blackwell's 3rd KDMC Defensive Player of the Week award in only 8 weeks of football. Suffice is to say, this young man is having a heck of a season for the Bogue Chitto Bobcats. I have told you over the past few weeks about his leadership, work ethic, and talent... so I guess all there's left to do this week is give you the facts. Once again, Blackwell led the Bogue Chitto defense with an outstanding 20 total tackles on the night. This game, however, was much closer than the Bobcats week 8 matchup as they barely edged the Stringer High School Red Devils 34-28. Coach Sartin's focused squad is now 9-0 and looking to improve on that record next week as they take on the St. Aloysius Flashes.
Players of the Week - Week 7
Offense:
Like many other weeks, this week we just could not settle on one guy for our Offensive Player of the Week honors. However, unlike most weeks, the 2 recipients are not only teammates, but also directly responsible for the other's success. This week's honors go to the Panthers QB, Zach Smith and fellow WR, Fred Trevillion. These 2 great competitors' star-like performances led Brookhaven to a big 35-28 win over Pearl. Smith completed 14 of 26 passes for 246 yards and 2 TDs, finishing with a 96.0 Quarterback Rating (QBR) Trevillion had 6 receptions for 117 yards, reeling in both scoring tosses from Smith. He averaged 19.5 yards receiving on the game. Call me crazy but I am willing to bet this won't be the last time these two guys connect in the end zone.

Defense:
This week's Defensive Player of the Week goes to a familiar face. Mr. Jeremy Blackwell from Bogue Chitto High School. Not only was Blackwell featured multiple times last season, but this already his second award of the season... and it's only week 7. This only speaks volumes of just what caliber of player this young man is. His defensive performance this past Friday was a large part of the reason the Bobcats managed to shut out the Cathedral Green Wave, 25-0. While there are obviously other talented, impactful players, Blackwell is the anchor, the Ray Lewis if you will, of that defense. He registered 16 total tackles on the game, and through 8 games has made 122 tackles. My eyes about popped out of my head when I first ran those numbers. Often times, every once in a while a good player will have a game with double digit tackles in the high teens. So far this season, Blackwell is averaging 15.25 tackles per game. Those, my friends, are video game numbers. There are no players at any level averaging those numbers' it is truly an impressive accomplishment. Honestly, at this rate, I wouldn't be shocked if he was able to eclipse the 200-tackle mark by season's end. There are a lot of special things about this Bobcats team this year, but Blackwell just might take the cake.
Players of the Week - Week 6
Offense:
This week the Offensive Player of the Week is the ever-elusive RB from Brookhaven High School, Justin Blue. Blue is no stranger to KDMC's Player of the Week honors, as he was a recipient of the award last season as a Junior. The Panthers suffered a 27-17 defeat at the hands of the West Jones High School Mustangs on Friday night, but not due to a lack of effort from Blue. The senior ball carrier registered 158 yards rushing on just 15 carries, averaging a mind-blowing 10.5 yards per carry. Blue has been a source of consistency thus far for the Panthers, averaging a solid 94 yards per game on the ground. He has also posted 4 Tds so far this season. With the way Blue is running the ball right now, don't be surprised to see Blue go over the 1,000 yard mark on the season. Stay tuned into this young man's season, it has a chance to be a special one.
Defense:
This week's Defensive Player of the Week award goes to Bogue Chitto High School's very own, Brock Roberts. As the Bobcats' Junior QB, Roberts is typically the guy that makes the offense click. This past Friday, however, he also dominated on the defensive side of the ball registering a solid 10 total tackles (9 solo, 1 assisted). The Bobcats got a big 40-3 district win over the Hartfield Academy Hawks. Roberts is a guy that has proven so far this year that he not only can carry a heavy load, but actually enjoys it. This great defensive performance is not a first for Roberts, as he has made 74 tackles through the first 7 games of the season averaging over 10 tackles a game. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, it's no secret Bogue Chitto is off to a piping hot start. I think it could really be a special season. This team has the look of one that could go far into the postseason.
Players of the Week - Week 5
Offense:
This week's Offensive Player of the Week goes to Brookhaven Academy's dynamic WR, Seth Rushing. While the Cougars lost a 35-21 heartbreaker to region rival Oak Forest Academy, it wasn't without great effort from the Senior WR. Rushing had 10 receptions for 154 yards and 2 TDs, accounting for 14 of the Cougars 21 points. Rushing averaged 15.4 yards per catch with a long of 49 yards. Brookhaven Academy will look to bounce back next week against Bowling Green, and with another performance like this from Rushing, I'll bet they do just that.
Defense:
This week's Defensive Player of the Week also comes from Brookhaven Academy, and once again, for the second week in a row, it's the Cougars stud LB, Preston Rawls. I could tell you that I'm shocked to see Rawls already winning this award again, but I would be lying. While the senior play maker contributes at both Tight End and Linebacker, he once again made his presence known on the defensive side of the ball on Friday night. Rawls racked up a team high 14 tackles with 2 assisted tackles and 12 solo tackles on the night, following an amazing 17-tackle effort last week. If you ask any coach, he will tell you that a tackle is a tackle no matter what it looks like. However, anyone that watches football knows that there are just some tackles that are better than others. This is the case with Rawls, when he makes a tackle, you hear the "pop" a mile away. This is also shown with the fact that 12 out of his 14 tackles were solo. The kid knows how to not only lay the wood, but also make sure that he wraps up in the process. Rawls is well on pace to tally over 100 tackles on the season, a very impressive feat to say the least.
Players of the Week - Week 4
Once again this week we just could not settle on 2 players for Player of the Week honors. KDMC is excited to honor these 3 young men for fantastic performances this past Friday night.
Offense:
The first corecipient for Offensive Player of the Week is dynamic RB, Deon Moore from West Lincoln High School. Moore racked up an impressive 129 yards on 21 carries, averaging a little over 6 yards per carry against the Mt. Herman Yellow jackets. Moore going over the century mark on the ground was a large reason the Bears were able to best the Yellow jackets 13-6 on Friday night. This win was big not only because it put them over .500 for the year, but also because it marked the first time in the 14-year history of the West Lincoln football program that they have won 3 straight games. It's safe to say, this historic milestone could not have been reached without the effort of Deon Moore on Friday, as well as his teammates.

Offense:
The second corecipient for this week's Offensive Player of the Week is a familiar face, Mr. Landon Nettles from Brookhaven Academy. Last week Nettles was honored as the Offensive Player of the Week, and just a mere 7 days later, he's done it again. While the Cougars fell short 41-35 to rival, Centreville Academy, Nettles made his presence known early and often. Nettles compiled an outstanding 184 yard performance on just 18 carries, averaging a little over 10 yards per carry. While that 10 yards per carry average is in large part due to a long 78-yard scamper from Nettles, yards are yards and points are points. On top of the 184 yards on the ground, Nettles also added 2 TDs for the game. While this defeat definitely stings, the Cougars will undoubtedly continue to lean on their talented RB to lead the way in the future.

Defense:
This week's Defensive Player of the Week is Brookhaven Academy LB, Preston Rawls. As mentioned above, the Cougars lost a high-scoring heartbreaker to their rival, the Centreville Academy Tigers. While, as a whole, it doesn't appear there was too much defense played in this contest, Rawls put on one heck of an individual defensive performance. Playing in his first game back from a shoulder injury, the stingy LB compiled 17 total tackles. This is a great game for a player that has been playing all season and is in a groove, but this is truly impressive for a guy who is just coming back from injury. Just like Nettles, while the defeat hurts, the rest of the season looks promising with Rawls manning the helm for the Cougar defense.
KDMC is proud to recognize these 3 young men on stand-out performances on the grid-iron this past weekend. Stay tuned to see who will light up the field next week.
Players of the Week - Week 3
This week KDMC is celebrating 3 players for player of the week honors. Sometimes there are just too many great performances to only choose two - a great problem to have for fans of good high school football.

Offense:
This week Landon Nettles, the electric, 5'11" 190lb RB from Brookhaven Academy, takes home KDMC's Offensive Player of the Week honors. The junior back rushed for 144 yards and 2 TDs on just 19 carries, averaging nearly 8 yards per carry. One area that Nettles really shines is in the yards after contact category. This is an area that coaches really value when evaluating a runner. Nettles showed this early in the 3rd quarter when he shed several tackles en route to a 14 yard TD run to put the Cougars up 28-7. From there, BA never looked back beating Wayne County 41-14. Nettles was sure to give his Offensive line a lot of credit for his impressive performance on Friday night, because after all, a RB is only as good as the big boys up front allow him to be.

Defense:
The first corecipient for Defensive Player of the Week honors is Loyd Star's very own Peyton Flowers. While the Hornets were blanked 28-0 by the hosting North Pike Jaguars, there was one bright spot on the night for Loyd Star, the play of star LB Flowers, who led all Hornet tacklers with 9 tackles. Flowers has shown good consistency through these first few games, and his team is going to need him to continue to play at this level to get into the W column.

Defense:
The second corecipient of the Defensive Player of the Week honors is Enterprise High School's Corey Hickman. Much like the case with Flowers, Hickman was one of the lone bright spots on the night for the Jackets. The stud LB led all Enterprise tacklers with 10 total tackles. Hickman and gang will look to get back on track after falling 55-14 to St. Andrew's High School. One thing is for sure however, more solid performances like this from Hickman and it might just rub off on those around him. After all, that's what a leader does.
KDMC is proud to honor these athletes for their fantastic performances during week 3. Stay tuned for the update for who is chosen as week 4's offensive and defensive players of the week.
Players of the Week - Week 2
-Drew Pirtle
This week we saw another pair of outstanding athletes showcase their skills on the gridiron. It is never an easy task selecting the KDMC Offensive and Defensive Players of the week due to so much talent in this region, and this week proved to be no different. Nonetheless, we have selected two kids this week that more than deserve player of the week honors.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Gage Posey, QB
Brookhaven Academy
|
|
This week's Offensive Player of the Week is the seasoned QB from Brookhaven Academy, senior Gage Posey. Posey is no stranger to this Region and has posted impressive numbers throughout his career. Against the Colonels of Copiah Academy, Posey threw for 192 yards on 14 of 18 passing with 1 TD. This lead the way for a 21-6 win for the BA Cougars, giving them a 2-0 start to the season. I fully expect to see more of the same from Posey as the Cougars look to stay unbeaten as they take on Simpson Academy next week.
