KDMC Receives Komen Grant for Mammogram Screenings

Brookhaven, MS – For the fifth consecutive year, the Central Mississippi Steel Magnolias Affiliate of Susan G. Komen® has awarded funding to King's Daughters Medical Center to help uninsured and underinsured women receive screening mammograms.

The grant will serve ladies living in Lincoln, Lawrence, Pike, Amite, Franklin, Adams, Jefferson, Wilkinson, and Walthall Counties who qualify for Komen assistance and who could not otherwise afford lifesaving screening.

According to Komen, 1 in 8 of the 1.5 million women living in Mississippi will get breast cancer in their lifetime. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 99 percent.

"It's just very important that you get your mammogram every year or two years. Women just need to take care of themselves," says Kelly Smith, KDMC Radiology Manager.

Ladies in need of screening mammography should visit their primary care physician and ask for a referral to the KDMC mammography suite. For those ladies who may qualify for Komen assistance, the physicians' office contacts KDMC mammographer Carolynn Smith who handles the Komen application screening. Carolynn contacts the ladies and walks them through the application process.

Once a woman is approved, her physician sends the order to Carolyn who schedules the screening mammogram. Mammograms are scheduled 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday. Komen covers the cost of the screening mammogram, and KDMC covers the cost to have the radiologist read it. There is no cost to the woman.

Komen assistance is available throughout the year for as long as the grant funds last. The Komen program at KDMC serves on average between 30 to 40 women annually.

The KDMC mammography suite provides digital mammography. The digital equipment uses the latest technology that allows for more detailed, clearer images in less time.

"We've created a spa-like environment when you come into the KDMC mammography suite. It’s very welcoming and very warm. We try to make it the best possible experience that you can have while you are here," says Carolynn Smith.

For additional information about the Komen screening mammography program, women are encouraged to call their primary physician's office. They may also leave a message on the KDMC mammography suite line at 601.823.5282 and their call will be returned.
